Key terms and concepts used throughout Tiwtor to help you understand the platform better.
Core concepts
Phrase list
A group of related phrases organized around a specific topic, theme, or learning goal.
Example: A "Welsh travel phrases" phrase list might contain Welsh phrases about hotels, restaurants, and transportation.
Phrase
A word or group of words in Welsh that you want to learn, along with its English translation.
Example: "Bore da" (Good morning) or "Sut mae?" (How are you?)
Spaced repetition
A learning technique that shows you phrases at increasing intervals to optimize long-term retention.
Example: A new phrase might be reviewed after 1 day, then 3 days, then 1 week, etc.
Learning features
Review session
A focused practice session for phrases that need reinforcement based on the spaced repetition algorithm.
Example: Reviewing phrases you struggled with yesterday.
Audio pronunciation
Computer-generated speech that helps you learn correct pronunciation of phrases.
Example: Hearing how "Bore da" is pronounced in Welsh.
Learning session
A structured practice session where you learn new phrases and review existing ones in your target language.
Example: A 15-minute session where you practice 20 Welsh phrases through various exercises.
Content management
AI generation
Using artificial intelligence to create phrases, translations, and phrase lists based on your requests.
Example: Asking AI to generate Welsh phrases about "ordering food in Welsh restaurants".
Phrase tree
A hierarchical view showing how complex phrases are broken down into smaller, learnable parts called subphrases.
Example: A long Welsh sentence like "Hoffwn i wneud archebu" (I would like to make a reservation) broken into "Hoffwn i" (I would like), "wneud" (to make), and "archebu" (reservation).
Subphrase
A smaller component extracted from a longer phrase that can be learned independently.
Example: From "Sut mae pethau heddiw?" (How are things today?), subphrases might include "Sut mae" (How are) and "pethau heddiw" (things today).
Phrase inbox
A temporary holding area for incomplete phrases that you've started creating but haven't finished adding to a phrase list yet.
Example: Draft phrases you've typed but haven't saved, or phrases imported from materials that need review before adding to your library.
Hidden phrases
Phrases that you've chosen to temporarily exclude from learning sessions while keeping them in your phrase list.
Example: Phrases that are too advanced for your current level.
Language rules
Custom instructions that guide AI-generated content to match your learning preferences, dialect, or specific language features.
Example: Rules like "Use informal Welsh (ti not chi)" or "Include North Welsh variations".
Discord community
Tiwtor's online community space where Welsh learners can connect, get support, discuss features, and share their language learning journey.
Example: Join the #support channel for help with technical issues or the #feature-requests channel to suggest new features.
Progress tracking
Learning goal
A target you set for your language learning progress, such as phrases learned per day or week.
Example: Learning 10 new phrases per week.
Streak
Consecutive days you've practiced with Tiwtor, helping maintain learning momentum.
Example: A 7-day streak means you've practiced every day for a week.
Library
Your personal library of all phrases, materials, and learning content organized in one place.
Example: All your Welsh phrase lists for different topics stored together.
