Introducing Tiwtor

Learning a language shouldn't mean memorising someone else's vocabulary lists. It should be personal & practical, focused on the words and phrases you'll actually use.

That's why we built Tiwtor — a language learning platform that is driven and directed by you.

Phrase lists

At Tiwtor's core is a simple but powerful concept: phrase lists. These are collections of phrases that you create, curate or generate.

Each one is built around a specific theme, challenge, or goal. You might create a phrase list for:

  • Phrases to use with kids – "Paid â phoeni" (don't worry), "Wyt ti eisiau rhywbeth i fwyta?" (do you want something to eat?), "Amser gwely!" (bedtime!)

  • Phrases that use a word you struggle with – Maybe you keep forgetting how to use "yn ôl" (back, according to). Create a list of 10 phrases that use it in different contexts, and suddenly it clicks.

  • Conversations at the local café – Order your coffee, chat about the weather, ask how someone's weekend was.

  • Work vocabulary – The specific terms and phrases you need for your job or industry.

The beauty is that these phrase lists are yours. You can add phrases manually, generate them with AI, or capture them on the go using the phrase inbox (more on that shortly).

Building your phrase lists

Creating a phrase list is straightforward. Give it a name, add a description, and start filling it with phrases. You can:

  • Generate new phrases – Tell Tiwtor what kind of phrases you need, and it'll create relevant ones for you.

  • Generate similar phrases – Found a phrase you like? Generate variations that use similar grammar or vocabulary.

  • Add manually – Type in phrases you've heard or want to remember. Add them in English or Welsh—Tiwtor's translation tools will handle the rest.

Behind the scenes, Tiwtor does the heavy lifting. Grammar explanations are generated automatically for each phrase, helping you understand the structure. Phrases are also broken down into smaller chunks, ready to be taught back to you progressively during lessons.

Once your phrase list is ready, you can jump straight into lessons—or keep building it over time as you encounter new phrases worth learning.

The phrase inbox

Ever been mid-conversation and heard a phrase you wanted to learn, but forgotten it by the time you got home? That's where the phrase inbox comes in.

The inbox is your quick-capture tool. When you're out and about, you can jot down a phrase—Welsh, English, or both—and save it for later.

When you're ready, you can review your inbox and move phrases into the appropriate phrase lists.

Goals: stay motivated and on track

Learning a language takes daily practice, and that's where goals help. Set yourself a daily target and maintain a streak.

Lessons: where the learning happens

Once you've built your phrase lists, it's time to learn. Tiwtor takes a sentence-based approach—your phrases are automatically broken down into smaller, manageable chunks and taught back to you progressively.

Audio is generated for every phrase, so you can learn by listening and repeating. This makes Tiwtor perfect for learning on the go—whether you're commuting, walking the dog, or driving (there's even a car mode designed specifically for hands-free learning).

The lessons adapt to you in real time. Tiwtor detects when you're breezing through material and when you're struggling. Finding something too easy? Snooze the phrase for a few weeks.

You're in control of the difficulty too. Confidence levels let you adjust how challenging the exercises are on the fly—dial it up when you're feeling sharp, dial it down when you need a gentler pace. And if you're feeling overwhelmed, you can switch from learning new material to reviewing what you already know with a single tap.

The result is a lesson experience that feels less like a rigid curriculum and more like a conversation, with you in control.

Why phrase lists work

Traditional language learning often throws hundreds of words & phrases at you in arbitrary order. You memorise them, forget them, and wonder why you can't hold a conversation.

By organising your learning around phrases that matter to you, Tiwtor makes Welsh feel less like a subject to study and more like a tool you're building for your life.
